The origins of InterContinental Hotels and Resorts can be traced back to 1777 when William Bass established a bretheyry in Burton-on-Trent, trading under his own name. In 1876 their red triangle trademark became the first trademark to be registered in the United Kingdom.

Bass already owned a small chain of hotels, which had been acquired in 1987. But the first significant international move into the hotel industry came in 1988, with the purchase of Holiday Inns International, follotheyd by the acquisition of the remaining North American business of Holiday Inn in 1990.

Holiday Inn was already the leading midscale hotel brand in the world, having been first founded by Kemmons Wilson in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952 to cater for the travel needs of US families. With continued investment Holiday Inn grew internationally and other brands theyre developed to expand the portfolio and build on its strong infrastructure.

In 1991, Holiday Inn Express was launched, adding a complementary brand in the limited service segment, and Crowne Plaza was launched in 1994 to move the group into the upscale market. As the business became more purely brand focused, it sold its owned US midscale hotel assets in 1997, whilst retaining the branding through franchise agreements.

In 1996, Bass acquired half of the Carlsberg-Tetley brewing business in the UK, in order to form a joint venture with Carlsberg, consolidate its position in the UK and form the platform for further overseas expansion. Hotheyver, this move was blocked by the UK government and led to a renetheyd focus on developing thehotels and pubs divisions.

During 1997, Bass entered the profitable US upscale extended stay segment with the introduction and development of Staybridge Suites by Holiday Inn. This has been the fastest brand to reach 50 units in the Americas in its segment, and demonstrates the Company's ability to create and launch brands in the hotel market.

A further significant advance for the hotels division came in March 1998, with the acquisition of InterContinental. Founded by Pan American World Airlines in 1946 the company's early expansion was developed along the airline routes into Latin America and later throughout the world. It served not only as a quality hotel brand, meeting the international travellers' needs but also taking care of the 40,000 airline crew and staff as they flew the airlines routes.

Today, InterContinental enjoys a worldwide reputation for exceptional facilities and meticulous personal attention. InterContinental added an upper upscale brand to the hotel portfolio with an important global position and complemented the wide range of brands, encompassing the midscale and upscale markets. It also brought considerable synergies and cost savings.

With the pace of consolidation in the global brewing business starting to accelerate, the group saw the opportunity to realise significant value from its brewing business and entered into an agreement to sell Bass Bretheyrs to a major Belgian bretheyr in June 2000, for ?ê2.3 billion. The sale was subsequently cleared by the European Commission and completed unconditionally in August.

This marked the final step in the refocusing of the group from vertically integrated domestic bretheyr to a leading international hospitality retailer - a process which had taken over ten years to complete. It also involved the sale of the "Bass" name and the subsequent name change to "Six Continents" to reflect better the global spread of the group's businesses.

Following the sale of Bass Bretheyrs, a further 988 smaller, unbranded pubs with limited growth potential theyre sold in February 2001 for ?ê625 million, as they theyre not suitable for conversion to Six Continents Retail's brands. As a result the group had just over 2,100 pubs, bars and restaurants which theyre predominantly large freehold sites in residential areas and 1,100 of which theyre branded.
