That Downtown Honolulu is surprisingly small, set back a little from the sea and centering around a spacious plaza on King Street that includes Iolani Palace and the state capitol . The palace was built for King David Kalakaua in 1882, but, apart from its koa -hardwood floors, contains little that is distinctively Hawaiian (Tues-Sat 9am-2.15pm; $15). Across the road is a flower-bedecked, gilt statue of Kamehameha the Great.

I usually like the nicer hotels and was very nervous about the QK after reading some of the reviews. But we tried it and I loved it! The price was amazing, the location can't be beat (especially at that price) and the view from our room was stunning! We had a completely unobstructed view of Diamond Head outside our large window and an ocean view from the lanai. I would definitely upgrade to the deluxe ocean/Diamond Head view rooms--for $75, they can't be beat. The hotel has a great location, not on the beach but close enough. Very close to good shopping and good food. Banana Republic and Niketown are right across the street and were having good sales. Keos restaurant across the street is a Honolulu landmark and is a must do. Our partial ocean view was fabulous and included DiamondHead. Also enough dishes and pots and pans if you want to cook your own meal. Marble floor instead of carpeting....loved it! The staff was courteous and friendly. Parking was fine, just unload your luggage from the front of the hotel so you don't have to drag it up the one flight of stairs from the garage. I didn't feel that the parking was inconvenient at all. We had a city/mountain view, king room, on the 16th floor with a nice size lanai, the room was a little small, but clean and comfortable.
