![]() On Saturday 5 July 2008, an estimated 15,000 New Zealanders Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and Indians braved hail storms to march single-file along 2.5km of Ti Rakau Drive in East Auckland, carrying placards and banners to call for Control Crime New Zealand.
The protest was organised by the Asian Anti-Crime Group, which is lobbying Parliament for tougher sentences after three homicides involving Asian victims in the past month Control Crime New Zealand.
Protest organiser and group founder Peter Law said Asian people were being ignored by the police and the march "probably made history" Control Crime New Zealand. All three deaths were in South Auckland. Dairy owner Navtej Singh, 30, was fatally shot in his shop, 80-year-old Yan Ping Yang died three days after being attacked in her home and Joanne Wang, 39, died after being run down in a shopping mall carpark Control Crime New Zealand.
Wang's family distributed a letter at the rally thanking their supporters but urging the Government to increase penalties for those convicted of crimes Control Crime New Zealand.

1, Manukau Residents March Rally Manukau residents are living in fear after the third homicide in the city in just over a week.Joanne Wang, 39, died after being hit by a vehicle carrying a person who snatched her handbag; Yang Yin Ping, 80, was attacked in her Manurewa home and left inside a wardrobe. She died from her injuries; and Navtej Singh, 30, was shot during a robbery of his business Riverton Liquor in Riverton Rd, Manurewa. However, the communities are standing strong with about 100 people taking part in a march and rally Control Crime New Zealand.
2, Crack Down Hard on All Offenders We are far too soft on criminals and give them far too much leeway. C'mon we all know what needs to be done: Crack down hard on all offenders no matter how small the issue. Stats show that if you nip offending in the bud there is less risk of the offenders going on to bigger offences. Stop allowing drug and alcohol use being used as a mitigating factor. Stop the idiocy of allowing repeat offenders out of jail - throw away the key! What Government wouldn't want to protect its citizens Control Crime New Zealand?
3, Sick of the Softly Approach People are getting sick and tired of the softly softly approach to crime. Its not working. Prisons without TV's and etc. TV is not a right its a privilige. You go to prison you have the very basic's. If you want the " luxury" goods then earn it like everyone on the outside. Life means Life 20yrs means 20 yrs. 3 strikes and that it, you have proved that you cant obey the laws that everyone else does to, So here is your new Cell. 3 offenses means at least 3 victims, People with 30,40 convictions means there are 30-40 victims Control Crime New Zealand.
4, Weak Judiciary Slap Everyone seems to be in agreement. Tougher sencences etc. Being in the Police I know thats a good start. Crims don't learn and are out quickly enough.if they go inside at all. Were doing our best but its frustrating arresting the same people over and over, to have the weak judiciary slap them on the wrist. To balance, prevention is important to and working with youth etc.I personally think the law protects the criminals more than the actual victims themselves. We are not tough on the criminals as well as Control Crime New Zealand.
5, A Guy Had 66 convictions There was a guy the other week had 66 convictions, what the hell is he doing out of jail? He should be in for a very long time with that record. Take away the TV's, give them basic meals, no cell phones, and get them out in the prison yards doing some type of work to help pay for their incarceration and give their visitors the once over so that the idea of carrying drugs to the prisoners becomes something of an ordeal.Lawyers getting paid to deliberately pervert the course of justice is not a good start the spirit Control Crime New Zealand.
6, Harsher Sentencing It is quite simple,Bring back the death penalty for murder rape and or all serious cases. It seems all one has to do is get a good mouth piece and he will say what a poor upbringing, he or she has had and should be given another chance, and a another, and a another and so on. The police do a damn good job to catch people only to let off or bail by the courts. Let's get back to the law of jungle/an eye for an eye. Harsher sentencing - would you harm an innocent child if you knew your hand would be cut off Control Crime New Zealand? An Auckland vigilante group is teaching members of the Asian community how to use everything from pens to perfume as weapons to fight crime.
Its methods include snatching handbags from unsuspecting restaurant-goers, then watching their victims' reactions before advising them on how to protect themselves. The Asian Anti-crime Group says "life is more important than the law" and encourages members to use force when confronted by criminals Control Crime New Zealand. "In a society where the police and law fail to protect the people, we have to use every means we have to protect ourselves. That is when vigilante groups are formed," AAG founder Peter Low told the Herald. He said the group was "not a gang or a triad" but "ordinary citizens doing something that the police have failed to do". About 300 people have joined the group since it was formed three months ago, and Mr Low - an immigrant from Singapore - says he is confident of getting at least 3000 members in the next few months.
"Many Asians are fed up with crime getting out of control and tired of help groups that talk but do little action," he said. "They are attracted by the AAG, which concentrates on action, and lessons they learn here are not easily forgotten." The group's methods are gaining strong support from Asian senior citizens and many Chinese students. Johnny Tian, a student from Shenzhen in southern China, said: "We are sick and tired of being helpless when constantly targeted by criminals, and feel that finally there is a group that can speak strongly and loudly for us."
A 63-year-old immigrant from Malaysia, who did not want to be identified, said: "I have been worried sick since the recent murders, and if not for the AAG, the police and Government will just happily sweep it under the carpet." But the group's unorthodox crime-fighting methods have drawn strong criticism from the police. The acting area commander for Counties Manukau East, Andrew Coster, said some of its actions - such as the restaurant handbag snatching - "cannot be condoned by the police". But Mr Low says: "The police and laws in New Zealand are a joke, and when we live in a society where the police and the law cannot protect us we have no choice but to do everything we can to protect ourselves."
The AAG is leading a protest march in Botany tomorrow to lobby Parliament for stronger laws and tougher sentences. But Asian Council on Reducing Crime chairwoman Rosa Chow said she would not be attending the demonstration as she wanted her group - a more established Asian anti-crime organisation - to "maintain a separate identity" from the AAG. "Although we respect the fact that people are free to do things in different ways, we are concerned at those people who take the law into their own hands, and we are more inclined to co-operate and work with the police." Instead of participating in the march, Ms Chow said her group would lobby Parliament by printing a petition in the Chinese Herald.
